Celebrating 10 Years of Innovation: Offshore Sensing's Journey

As we marked our 10th anniversary this fall, we reflect on a decade of pioneering marine robotics and groundbreaking achievements. Established in 2014 as a spin-off from the Christian Michelsen Research (now NORCE), Offshore Sensing has been at the forefront of developing the world’s first long-endurance Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) for ocean data collection—the Sailbuoy.

10 Years of USV Innovation: Offshore Sensing and the Sailbuoy Journey

From our inception, we have worked closely with research centres and key partners to push the boundaries of marine technology. In 2018, the Sailbuoy became the first unmanned surface vessel to complete an Atlantic crossing, navigating 5100 km from Newfoundland to Ireland autonomously over 80 days. This achievement solidified Sailbuoy’s capabilities and demonstrated its potential for a wide range of applications, from tracking oil spills to collecting environmental and atmospheric data.

Collaborative Success and Innovation

Our success over the past decade is built on strong collaborations with partners, including NORCE and key investors like Sarsia. These relationships have helped us develop and refine the Sailbuoy, ensuring it meets the highest durability and performance standards. Our technology uses wind and solar power, making it a sustainable solution for long-term ocean monitoring with minimal environmental impact.

The Future of Ocean Data Collection

Today, Sailbuoy is a fully customizable platform equipped with various sensors to meet client needs across multiple industries. We have expanded our offerings from research institutions to energy, defence, and environmental monitoring sectors, enabling our customers to gather vital ocean data efficiently and sustainably.

As we look ahead, we remain committed to innovation, sustainability, and pushing the boundaries of marine technology. We are excited about the next decade and Sailbuoy’s continued growth as a leading autonomous ocean data collection solution.

Here’s to another ten years of innovation and collaboration!
