The Sailbuoy is a long-endurance unmanned surface vessel (USV) designed for oceanographic data collection, environmental monitoring, and other marine applications.
From Transatlantic crossings, Faroes Island and Svalbard research, to monitoring and collecting data at Cape San Blas, marine ecology research in Sweden, and more. Take a look at the Sailbuoy missions here.
Autonomy: It can operate autonomously for long endurance periods, typically up to several months, using wind power for propulsion and solar power for onboard electronics.
Data Collection: It has various sensors to measure oceanographic and environmental parameters such as water temperature, salinity, currents, chlorophyll levels, and weather conditions. Depending on the specific mission or client needs, it is built with custom payloads and sensor integration. It provides real-time data transmission and allows for remote monitoring.
Monitoring and Data link: With long endurance coupled with acoustic modems, the Sailbuoy can communicate and monitor underwater networks. This gives you a mobile ocean-based gateway that enables data to flow from one discrete network to another.
Design and Implementation: The Sailbuoy’s design makes it a sustainable, zero-emissions, low-cost alternative to traditional research vessels and other USVs, offering a reliable solution for long-term data collection in challenging marine environments.
Navigation and Control: The Sailbuoy has GPS and other sensors that allow it to navigate pre-programmed routes or be controlled remotely. It can adjust its sail and rudder to optimize its course in various wind conditions.
The latest version of the Sailbuoy, mark (MK) 4, has been tested with wind speeds up to 30 m/s. See the approved metrics here.
